There’s one major thing getting in the way of your holiday spirit — finals. But if you think that you can’t enjoy the season until you turn in your last paper and pack your car to head home, you’re cheating yourself out of a lot of good cheer. Head to campus concerts and holiday events — even sponsored study breaks usually involve special treats — and spruce up your dorm room to surround yourself with festive spirit.
Christmas tree and Hanukkah lights are a popular decorating choice for a lot of college students because they’re cheap, easy, and instantly transform the ambiance of your room. String them around your window or door frame, or even tangle them through your headboard (if you have one). Classic white will give your room a more spiritual, ethereal feel, while multi-colored or blinking strands liven up your room for parties. Just remember to unplug the lights before going to bed or leaving your room for hours to prevent fires or premature bulb burn-outs.
If you celebrate Christmas, get a small tree to put on a bookshelf. You can get a real tree if it’s allowed (some dorms prohibit real trees because of the fire hazard) or settle for a fake one that you can decorate. Buy or make small ornaments to make it more festive. You and your roommate can also hang stockings off bureaus, beds or even desk chairs and leave small gifts for each other throughout the season. Something as small as a candy bar that you bought with your meal plan card or a new pack of highlighters is fun to "open" when it’s hidden in a stocking.
Whatever holiday you celebrate around this time of year, surround yourself with images and objects that remind you of celebrating with family and friends. Put up photos of past celebrations, change your screen saver or desktop background, and hang up a decorative ornament on your door to spread the fun.
